Line Editing Services and Copyediting That Keep Your Voice

Our line editing services and copyediting work on your book one sentence at a time. We make your prose clear, smooth and correct, so readers stay in the story. Meanwhile, your voice stays yours from the first line to the last.

What Our Line Editing Services Include

Line editing and copyediting are two layers of the same job. We usually do them together, so your book gets one clean, careful pass.

  • Line Editing for Style and Flow

We tighten wordy sentences, vary rhythm and sharpen dialogue. We also cut repetition and clichés, so every line earns its place.

  • Copyediting for Accuracy

We fix grammar, spelling, punctuation and word choice. We also check facts like dates and names where they affect the story.

  • Consistency Across the Book

Your editor builds a style sheet as they go. It tracks spellings, character names, timelines and hyphens, so nothing changes by accident.

  • House Style or Yours

We follow the Chicago Manual of Style for American English and New Hart's Rules for British English. Or, if you prefer, we follow a style guide you already use.

Make Every Sentence Count

Clean, confident prose is what turns a good story into a book readers recommend.

How Our Copyediting Process Works

You always know which stage your book is at and who is working on it.

  1. 01

    Sample Edit

First, we edit a short sample of your pages. That way, you can see our approach before you commit to the full edit.

  2. 02

    Full Line and Copy Edit

Next, your editor works through the whole manuscript in track changes. They explain bigger edits in short margin notes.

  3. 03

    Your Review

Then you accept or reject each change. You also get the style sheet, so you can see every choice we made and why.

  4. 04

    Clean Final File

Finally, we check your decisions and send a clean file. After that, your book is ready for proofreading and layout.

Line Editing Without Losing Your Voice

A heavy-handed edit can make every book sound the same. That is the last thing we want. So your editor first learns how you write: your rhythm, your word choices and the tone of your narrator. Then they edit in that voice, not their own.

We work with novelists, memoir writers and nonfiction authors around the world. Your editor will know your genre, so their changes fit what readers expect.

If your plot or structure still needs work, begin with developmental editing first. Once the line edit is done, your book moves on to our book proofreading services and then to book formatting, all with the same team.

What our authors say

  • I write fast, snappy productivity guides from a first-person perspective, which means my grammar and consistency often take a back seat to getting the ideas on the page. Ordwick's copyeditors caught every timeline error, misplaced comma, and formatting inconsistency without turning my conversational style into a dry, academic textbook. They polish without stripping the personality.

    David M.

    Digital Creator & Author

  • Moving from developmental editing to sentence-level polish is usually where things get lost in translation. Because Ordwick uses an in-house team, my copyeditor already knew why certain structural choices were made in the previous round. That continuity saved me from having to explain my book all over again, and the final polish was absolutely flawless.

    Elena T.

    Non-Fiction Author

  • I've had editors completely rewrite my sentences without asking in the past. Ordwick’s process of using tracked changes and allowing me to review every single query before finalizing was incredibly respectful. I always felt like I had the final say over my own manuscript, which is exactly how the editing process should be.

    Sarah L.

    Indie Novelist

  • Ordwick didn't just publish my book; they treated it like a piece of architecture. Every font choice, every margin, every marketing move was intentional and precise.

    Marisol Reyes

Author Of 'the Architecture Of Silence

Copyediting and Line Editing FAQs

Still have a question? Book a free call

What is the difference between line editing and copyediting?

Line editing improves style, rhythm and clarity. Copyediting fixes errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation, and keeps details consistent. We usually combine both in one pass, so your book gets a full sentence-level edit.

Do I still need a proofread after a line edit?

Yes. Changes can bring in new errors, and any editor can miss a typo. A separate proofread with fresh eyes is the best final safety net.

Will you change my writing style?

No. We edit to make your voice clearer, not different. You review every change in track changes and keep full control.

Can you edit in American or British English?

Yes. Tell us which you prefer. We will follow it across the whole book and note it on your style sheet.

How much do your line editing services cost?

We quote each book on its own. The price depends on word count, genre and how much the prose needs. Ask for a free quote and a sample edit.

How long does copyediting take?

Most novels take two to four weeks. We will confirm a firm date before we begin.
