Developmental Editing Services That Strengthen Your Story
Our developmental editing services look at the big picture of your book. We study your plot, pacing, structure and characters, then show you exactly what works and what needs more care. As a result, you revise with a clear plan instead of guessing.
What Developmental Editing Looks At
A developmental edit happens before any line-by-line polish. It asks whether the book as a whole does what you want it to do.
Plot and Story Structure
We check how your story is built, from the opening hook to the final page. We find gaps, slow middles and endings that do not land, then suggest ways to fix them.
Pacing and Reader Engagement
Some scenes rush past while others drag. So we map the rhythm of your book and show where to speed up, slow down or cut, so readers keep turning pages.
Character Arcs
Readers follow people, not plots. We look at what your characters want, how they change and whether their choices feel true to who they are.
Argument and Flow for Nonfiction
For nonfiction, we test the order of your chapters and the strength of your ideas. That way, each chapter builds on the last and your reader never feels lost.
Fix the Big Issues Before You Polish
Line edits on a book with structural problems waste time and money. Start with the story itself.
How Our Developmental Edit Works
You always know which stage your book is at and who is working on it.
- 01
Full Editorial Review
First, your editor reads the whole manuscript. They note what is strong, what is missing and what could confuse a reader.
- 02
Your Editorial Letter
Next, you get a detailed editorial letter. It explains the main issues, why they matter and how to fix them, with examples from your pages.
- 03
Margin Notes and a Call
Then you get comments in the margins of your manuscript. We also book a call, so you can ask questions and agree on a plan together.
- 04
Revision Support
Finally, you revise at your own pace. Once you are done, your editor can review the new draft before it moves on to line editing.
Developmental Editing Is Where Good Books Become Great
Most first drafts have a strong idea at their heart. But the shape of the book often hides it. A good developmental editor helps you see your manuscript the way a reader will, and then helps you rebuild it with purpose.
We edit fiction in every major genre, from thrillers and romance to fantasy and literary novels. We also edit memoirs, self-help and business books. Your editor will match your genre, so their advice fits the readers you want to reach.
Once the structure is sound, your book can move on to copyediting and line editing with the same team. Later, a fresh reader handles our book proofreading services. Want to know what to expect? What is developmental editing?
Developmental editing is a big-picture edit. It looks at plot, structure, pacing, character and theme, or at argument and flow in nonfiction. It comes before line editing and proofreading.
When should I get a developmental edit?
The best time is after you finish a full draft and have revised it once on your own. At that point, the story is on the page, but there is still time to make big changes.
What will I receive?
You will get an editorial letter, usually 10 to 20 pages, plus notes in the margins of your manuscript. We also include a call with your editor to talk through the plan.
Will you rewrite my book?
No. Your editor explains what to change and why, with examples. But you make the changes, so the book stays in your voice. If you want more hands-on help, ask about our writing coaches.
How much do your developmental editing services cost?
We quote every book on its own. The price depends on word count, genre and how much support you want. Send us a few details for a free quote.
How long does a developmental edit take?
Most manuscripts take three to five weeks. We will confirm a firm date before we start, so you can plan your revision time.
